Mid-Season Post

So, as usual, the season is moving faster than this blog is being updated, so as a result, I'm a bit behind on posting information...  My apologies...  Here's a few items for anyone out there who checks this site occasionally:

Schedule Changes:
We have a couple of last minute changes to our schedule to finish out the last month of the season.  Here's what we have left with the specific information I currently have for each: (PS, we DO send an Itinerary home with your athlete before EVERY meet with specifics on dismissal time, race time, race location, weather forecast, course description, etc.--if you haven't seen those... • JV Boys @ 4:00
    • Combined Girls @ 4:30

  • CANCELLED--Friday, October 4th--Park City Invitational--We have decided NOT to go to Park City's inviational due to it's proximity to the Sanpete Classic.
  • Tuesday, October 8th--Meet w/Maple Mountain HS @ the SF Sports Complex.  We decided to put together one last FLAT, FAST meet as a final tune-up prior to Region!  Schedule will probably be:
    • Girls @ 3:30

USU AGGIE INVITATIONAL

2013 Aggie Invitational

Dear Parents-

In previous seasons the Salem Hills Cross Country team has traveled to Cedar City the first weekend of October for an overnight meet.  However, due to situations outside our control we will not be able to travel to Cedar City this season.  While we are disappointed about this, we are excited to have come up with what we believe to be a great alternative.

As hopefully your son/daughter has already told you, we will be taking the Salem Hills Cross Country team to the USU Aggie Invitational on Friday-Saturday September 6th-7th.  We have never traveled to Logan for a meet before, and have heard great things about this meet.  Additionally, it will be an opportunity for us as coaches to build relationships and network with college coaches/programs in Northern Utah.

While this meet is optional, we REALLY want everyone to come with us!  We’ve done our best to keep the costs at a minimum so money hopefully won’t be a deterrent for anyone.  We are asking each athlete to pay $50.00 to the SHHS Finance office to help with the cost of the trip.  While that won’t completely cover all costs, it will be close enough to make it work!  That will include:  Bus, Hotel, Dinner, Breakfast and Race Entry Fee.  The only other cost would be some money to buy lunch on our way home after the meet.

Here are the items needed and due dates:

  • By Wednesday, August 28th:
    • Parent Permission slip filled out and returned to Coach Thompson
  • By Friday, August 30th:
    • $50.00 paid to the SHHS Finance office

Pre-Region Results

Here are the Pre-Region meet results from Wednesday evening.  We had a great meet with the Lady Skyhawks finishing in 2nd place and the Guys finishing 1st!!!  Way to go SKYHAWKS!  We are on our way!  Now the real work begins!

RESULTS

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

It's GO TIME!!!

Ready or not, here we GO!!!  Our season officially gets under way on Wednesday evening with the Pre-Region meet at Salem Hills.  Here is the schedule:

-Athletes be there by 5:30 pm to warm-up

-Girls race @ 6:30pm

-Boys race @ 7:00pm

We could still use some more parental assistance at the race if anyone is available.  Just find coach Thompson on the track before 6:15.  (He'll be the one running around like a crazy person...)

Cross Country Camp

We are in the midst of finalizing our numbers for Cross Country Camp this weekend.  We are going to be ordering our food and other stuff on Tuesday, so we need to know RIGHT AWAY if you're planning on being with us and haven't touched base with us!

I've had some parents asking about directions up to camp.  We would love to have ANY parents come up ANYTIME they would like!  We have a good time, and the more the merrier!  Here's the directions:

Directions to Shadow Mountain
  • ·         Drive up Hobble Creek Canyon
  • ·         Continue past the Golf Course, till the road forks
  • ·         Take the LEFT FORK
  • ·         Drive 4.5 miles up the Left Fork of Hobble Creek Canyon
  • ·         You will see a turn-off on the LEFT side of the road.  There’s a small street sign that says “Whittemore Dr.” and there was a For Sale sign that says “Blackhawk” I think (last year, not sure if it’s still there...)  Take this turn-off.
  • ·         Follow Whittemore Dr. up about 2.1 miles.  It will turn from pavement to dirt about ¼ mi up.  Each time the road forks (over the 2.1 miles), keep on Whittemore Dr.
  • ·         At some point along the road, you will come across a gate that was new last year, but I’m not sure exactly where it is… There is an access code that must be entered.  It is 9512.
  • ·         At about 2.1 miles, the road will fork again.  There’s a cabin up on your right.  Take the LEFT fork, called Oakwood Dr.
  • ·         The road will wind around for another .7 miles, and eventually becomes Nebo Circle.  You’ll pass through a gate, and into camp!  WELCOME!!
Also, here's our Tentative Itinerary for Camp.

Summer Update

We, as Coaches, wanted to send out a quick reminder about our summer conditioning that is going on right now, and also some further information concerning our team CAMP that is coming up!

PARENT MEETING

In order for the District to allow us to do all the fun overnighters that are a part of our season, we must have a parent meeting to explain what the season entails and to ask for a parent "vote of approval" for our overnighters (Cross Country Camp, Cedar City and California.)  It is required that all runners and a parent be represented at the meeting!  Please do EVERYTHING in your power to be present!

Date:  Tuesday, July 23rd
Time:  7:00 pm
Place:  SHHS Cafeteria

SUMMER RUNNING

M, W, F Practices--We are practicing together as a team each Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 7:00 am.  We meet at the SHHS Track.  These practices are official team practices and we need everyone to be in attendance if they are in town.

Thursday Practices--We meet on Thursday evenings to do a Trail Run.  The location varies week to week, but generally we'll meet at the Track and carpool from there!  These are great runs!  Don't miss them!

-This Thursday (July 18th) both coaches are out of town, but the Captains are leading a Thursday evening run followed by water games and dinner!  Meet at the Track at 7:00 pm to join the fun.  The captains will have a signup sheet at practice this week to sign up for dinner assignments!

It's time to get SERIOUS!!!

Hopefully you've all been having a great summer so far and have been getting a lot of mileage in. It is CRITICAL that we establish a strong base in the summer so we can compete the way we want to in the Fall! If you've been slacking, GET OUT AND RUN!!! RIGHT NOW!!!!

We wanted to make sure you remember a few items:

1- Be sure you are reporting your weekly mileage online every week. We have had a lot of you NOT doing that... Get on it and report what you're running! The link is at the top of this page!

2- Starting on MONDAY, JULY 1ST we will be practicing 3 mornings/week. We will meet at the track each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:00 am. You need to do everything in your power to be in attendance with us each day. This is the "REAL" season now, so you need to be there!

3- We have not had very many kids submit their paperwork. That needs to be done ASAP. If you need paperwork, see Coach Thompson at practice!

4- Our Cross Country Camp will be August 1st-3rd at Shadow Mountain up Hobble Creek Canyon. They are district owned cabins, and we have a GREAT time! YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS IT!!! In order to be invited, you must be attending practice and log at least 80 miles if you're new or 150 miles if you're a returner. You're running out of time, so you'd better get on it!!!

We are looking forward to this season and hope you are as well! Our philosophy is the more the merrier, so get your friends and come join us! We'll see you on Monday morning!

Sanpete Classic and Region Results and STATE CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

Here are the results for the last couple races we ran.

Sanpete Classic
Our team traveled to Fairview on October 2nd to compete in the Sanpete Classic Invitational at Skyline Mountain Resort.  We had great showings out of all of our teams with both our Boys and Girls Varsity teams finishing 1st overall and our JV team dominating their race as well!  What a great race heading into Region!

Region Championships
On Saturday, October 6th we competed in the Region VIII Championships at Kiwanis Park in Provo.  Our team ran well in all our races.  On the girls' side, we were once again led by Sierra Malm who finished 4th overall as our Lady Skyhawks finished in 3rd place overall to qualify for the State Championships.  Great Job Ladies!

On the boys' side, we were led by Tate Muhlestein and Gavin Hasty who finished in a photo-finish.  Our guys fought hard and competed to the best of their ability, but unfortunately fell short of qualifying for State.  We are proud of the way they fought throughout the season, and they have represented our school and program with honor.  Great Job!  Tate Muhlestein will be representing our program at the State Championships on Wednesday, October  17th.

Upcoming Races

We've got several races over the next week or so that we, as Coaches thought we ought to repeat the details of it for those of you who may have forgotten to mention them to your parents...

  • Saturday, September 1st--Utah County Invitational
    • This meet was originally on our schedule for Friday.  However, it was changed to Saturday morning.  The race is at the Lakeside Sports Park in Orem (400 S 1850 W).  It's a great 3.1 mile course that is almost entirely grass.  Last year our team ran VERY well at this meet.  It's a little different format as well--NO VARSITY.  They run a Freshman/Sophomore race and Junior/Senior race.  Race times are as follows:
      • 9:00--Frosh/Soph Girls Race
      • 9:30--Frosh/Soph Boys Race
      • 10:00--Jr./Sr Girls Race
      • 10:20--Jr./Sr Boys Race
      • 10:40--Jr./Sr Boys Race #2 (if necessary)
  • Tuesday, September 4th--4-school Meet hosted by Juab
    • This meet we are still getting details on, as it was just put together this week.  What we DO know is that it will be Tuesday afternoon in Juab County.  It will NOT be at Juab High School however.  Instead we will be racing in the Nebo Loop Scening Byway area.  The race will start at Bear Canyon Campground at the top of Salt Creek Road and come down the road to the large parking lot near the fork of the Salt Creek Road and Nebo Loop Road.  Please plan for about 20-30 minutes extra drive time from Juab High if you are coming.  Here are the driving directions we just received:
      • Those traveling from the North, South, or West of Nephi should get on Highway 132 (100 North in Nephi) which crosses Exit 225 on I-15. Go East up Highway 132 into Salt Creek Canyon about 5 miles until you see the sign for “Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway”, then turn left onto Salt Creek Canyon Road.  Once on Salt Creek Canyon Road go 3 miles up the road until you come to the large parking lot on your left before the major fork in the road (the fork has Salt Creek Road on the left and Nebo Loop Road on the right). This is the finish line and bus/spectator parking area. The course starting point is 2 miles up the road on your left (Salt Creek Road) at Bear Canyon Campground (so past Ponderosa Campground, Cottonwood Campground, and the Andrew’s Ridge trailhead). All runners must be dropped off by their school buses at the start at least 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the first race (so all Boys and Girls should be dropped off by 3:45 PM at the starting line). Then, all buses/vehicles should proceed back down the road to the large parking area near the finish.
    • Race times are as follows:
      • 4:00--Girls Race
      • 4:45--Boys Race
  • Saturday, September 8th--Wasatch Invitational @ Soldier Hollow.
    • This is ALWAYS one of our team's favorite races of the whole year.  It's hilly, it's tough, it's nasty, and it's a TON of fun!  This is a TRUE cross country course!  I'm assuming the schedule will go something like this:
      • 9:00--JV Girls
      • 9:30--JV Boys
      • 10:00--Varsity Girls
      • 10:30--Varsity Boys
